Long time Ovation addict here. I started with an original Balladeer and an oddity that I found in a pawn shop in Savannah, Ga. in 1973 while in high school - a White Breadwinner. The pawn shop owner thought it was the ugliest thing he'd ever seen and I talked him down to $125 - including the hardshell case. Since then, I've owned 2 more Breadwinners, another Balladeer, and I now use a 1973-ish Deacon and a red-topped shallow bowl Celebrity.
If you can imagine - hair down to there, bell bottom polyester pants, Wallabees, Wide collared floral print Rayon shirt, wide leather belt, White Breadwinner pumped through a Thomas Organ Cry Baby, Muff Fuzz, and into a 1972 Fender Twin Reverb ... what a sight.
If anyone has more knowledge about the serial numbers, this one is E 1354. The only thing I can get from Ovation is that it was made between "01/73 and 12/75".
As to the remainder of my "Family", My second favorite is my 1982 Yamaha SG800S Standard. All the bulk and sustain of a '70s Les Paul, in silver metal flake. Seriously smooth tone and switchable pole pieces on each pickup allow for almost as wide a range of sound as my Deacon. Next is my Fender Telecaster and '72 Strat pairing - sometimes, only a Fender fits the bill. Finally, on a whim I bought a BC Rich Warlock in 1998 - okay, so there is something to brute force and guitars.
As for amplification, I'm down to a Fender Princeton Chorus and a Kustom reissue. However, since I got my hands on Guitar Rig (Native Instruments), even they are just gathering dust. If you have a computer, there's nothing that should be keeping you from checking out
Guitar Rig from Native Instruments. You get an almost unlimited arsenal of amplification options - from simple, low-profile practice amps to full blown Marshall-style multi-cabinet stacks with a wall of pre or post amplifier effects. Even my Celebrity sounds sweet ...
I use D'addario strings exclusively (and have since around 76 or 77). My current favorites are EXL-120+ for all but the BC Rich which gets EHR-370's and the Celebrity which gets EJ15's.
I've moved from a performer (70's, 80's) to more of a collector and hobbyist through today. Unfortunately, running a software company can really eat up your time...
Drop me a note to say hi!
